"The Old Rugged Cross"

The Old Rugged Cross is a representation of the hymn, and stands as a tribute to the Youngstown-born composer.

The Reverend George Bennard (1873-1958) was born in Youngstown, Ohio on February 4, 1873. A former coal miner and Methodist Episcopal Minister, he became a prolific composer of over 350 hymns and songs.

In 1913 he wrote “The Old Rugged Cross” saying that only after a “testing of faith” in his own life did he find the words to the hymn.

On April 5, 1959 thousands gathered at Lake Park Cemetery to dedicate The Old Rugged Cross landmark as a tribute to Rev. Bennard. The Cross sits on a knoll overlooking a small lake - a peaceful and serene setting.
